Breathing Exercises To Relieve Stress: Why 5 Minutes A Day Could Change Your Life

by Universalwellnesssystems

Welcome to Change Your Life In Your Lunchtime, a new four-part series on how to minimize anxiety and feelings of overwhelm, from the power of deep breathing to meditation. In the first episode, Vicky Kalinen explains why just taking five minutes a day can keep his mood balanced.

Every year, we know Christmas is coming, but we still find ourselves feeling stressed and a little panicked, just like every year. There are all the work deadlines to meet (does my boss really need my next year's budget right now?), endless social events and late-night family gatherings as party season gets into full swing. We organize holidays, end-of-school concerts, late-night social events, and more (we Really (We need to catch up before Christmas!), not to mention gift shopping and planning the menu for the big day. that. teeth. Stressful.

Of course, this isn't the only time we feel overwhelmed. As Vicki Kallinen, who opened Freeman's Bay Studio Red Wellness in 2015, discovered, demand for restorative classes has increased post-pandemic as more people try to find balance in their lives. It's doubled.

Thankfully, there are simple and easy ways to help you get through the stresses of everyday life. Vicki herself uses the 5-minute reset every day to help balance the good times and the difficult times.

“Developing daily habits has helped me live my life better.'' “My goal is to always feel calm and in control, and ultimately have peace of mind.'' But everyone is different, and some people want to improve their sleep or reduce stress. An important part of maintaining healthy habits is having a goal. Why, why. This is motivation. And it helps you stay focused. And the key is consistency.”

Vicky Cullinane, founder of Studio Red Wellness, believes in the power of breathing techniques.

Vicki's approach is incredibly simple.

First, move your body. Ideally, move to another room or, depending on your mood, go for a gentle or brisk walk, such as climbing some stairs or a hill. “The key is to change the location,” explains Vicky. “When you move, energy moves from your head to your body. This helps connect you to your breath.”

The second step is to sit quietly and take 10 deep abdominal breaths once you are in the other space. This will help calm you down.

After you finish breathing deeply, sit quietly for 5 to 45 minutes.

“We never think about it,” says Vicki. At the end of the day, you are in control of all your thoughts and how you react to them.

“The key is to make yourself feel at ease, and this five-minute reset can be done anytime, anywhere. The feeling after you're done is incredible,” smiled Vicky. “I feel clearer, more focused, and more energized.”

Make the most of your 5-minute reset

  • Consistency is key. Please do it every day.
  • Please find a time that is convenient for you. Mid-afternoon is a good time to re-energize for the evening.
  • When you move from one space to a new space, you create new energy and connect with your body.
  • Find a quiet space where you won't be disturbed.
