YWCA Minneapolis Closes Two Locations
YWCA Minneapolis will close two fitness and pool operations in the coming months as it refocuses for greater impact.
For some YWCA Minneapolis members, the Uptown location is convenient no matter where they are.
“It’s so close to where I live, I can get there in less than five minutes,” said Minneapolis YWCA member James Frazier.
Neighbors come to the gym several times a week to use the pool and fitness area.
But within a few months, members will have to choose a new gym in Minneapolis.
“I was very, very devastated, but there are so many things about the YWCA that are perfect for me,” Frazier said.
The Minneapolis YWCA is restructuring its nonprofit organization in November, starting with the closure of its uptown store and downtown fitness center. The nursery school will remain open. A popular swim program that has lasted for decades is also closed.
Nearly 100 people have lost their jobs due to the closure.
“It’s really hard. We have to say goodbye to the 85 people who have been with us. Things like this never get better,” said Minneapolis YWCA President and CEO Sherry. Carsen Watson said.
Carsen Watson said the goal is to put more money and resources into more impactful programs such as early childhood education, youth programs and racial justice.
“We thought it was time to turn around, forge a new path forward, and focus more and more on our efforts and areas,” said Curtin Watson. Ta.
Carsen Watson witnessed changing needs as student test scores plummeted after the pandemic and mental health problems worsened among young people.
She explained that the change is in line with their mission to put young people first.
“We realize the needs of our community are changing, and responding to that change and adapting our services to it has always been part of our history,” she said. Told.
Fitness and pool operations at our Downtown and Uptown locations will close on November 1st. The Midtown store will remain open.
