YouTube announced its video-sharing platform on Tuesday as it changes its policy on content related to eating disorders.

The company said it has existing policies aimed at removing content that “glorifies or promotes” eating disorders, but includes “mimicable behavior” that at-risk viewers can copy. Some examples cited in the release include eating disorders such as strict calorie restriction, postprandial ‘pooping’, and ‘eating disorder-related weight bullying’.
Eating disorder-related videos with an “educational, documentary, scientific or artistic context” or videos discussing disorders in the context of recovery may remain under fine-tuned guidelines may be tagged with a “crisis resource panel” containing links to mental health information.
Uploads may also be subject to an 18+ age restriction. “For example, we may age-restrict a video detailing an eating disorder that a creator has gone through while sharing their recovery,” the release said.
