“Quiet no smoking” took the internet by storm this summer. TikTok and media outlets it was noisy Talk about your formal resignation from Hustle Culture.

A pledge to do the bare minimum. Nothing more. In on 9, out on 5. quit quietly Occurs in tandem with growing worker frustration Low wages and an unhealthy work culture. For employees, Recent research College students also show acceptance of this phenomenon. More than half of students say they put less effort into their schoolwork to maintain their mental health.

Our generation has made great strides in removing the stigma of mental health. Thirty years ago, mental health was not a valid reason to miss work or school. now, boss When Professor Mental health needs are being addressed.

We understand that stress and burnout can cause mental health issues. that’s not what i’m talking about. The problem is that mental health has added to the laundry list of commonly accepted but hard-to-proven excuses for absences and tardiness, such as illness and family emergencies.

Mental health is not an excuse for everything, nor should it be. This seemingly unconditional acceptance of mental health is exploited to the detriment of those who are actually suffering.

School can be difficult. It makes sense, but less effort is not the solution. Clubs centered around wellness and mental health awareness are doing important work. But that shouldn’t come at the expense of success or the effort required to achieve it. All too often, the story is told that working too hard takes a toll on your mental health. So the logical alternative is to work less hard as a form of self-care. Of course, easier said than done. Managing your time, increasing efficiency, and not overextending yourself with commitments are ways to find that balance.

Perhaps Penn’s unofficial motto, “Work hard, play hard,” might be a hint. When I work, I do my best. When I play, I just focus on that.

Besides, there are benefits to working hard and going above the bare minimum. For one thing, you’ll learn and understand more if you take the time to complete the optional reading material and practice questions. And when you put that extra effort in, it’s pretty obvious to the professor: it means a potential future letter of recommendation or an opportunity to work on research.

In fact, quitting quietly has backfired at work, quiet firingBosses combine minimal effort with minimal potential, thus reducing the employee’s work and responsibilities.

University of Pennsylvania students can pursue prestigious jobs in banking and consulting, earning a lot of hours and rewards. Quitting quietly now will make the transition to work especially difficult.

When you quietly quit your job, you are being polished for someone else who may not appreciate your work or reward you well. If you quit, you are quitting for yourself and your own future. Quitting quietly now will only hurt yourself.

This is especially true in schools like Penn. In the end, the admissions office said: For greats. to generate innovative ideas. For Ivy League fame and Philadelphia spirit. And to develop innovative thinkers who understand that things are not the way they should be. ”

Quitting quietly means seeing and accepting that things are the way they should be. No firsts or greats come out because you get minimal results.

Quitting smoking quietly may seem revolutionary for your mental health, but it is never revolutionary if you choose to do so.
