STARCITY, Va. – The West Virginia University School of Medicine hosted the first “Cooking Day” in its “Walk with the Doctor of the Future” series on January 21 at 10:00 a.m. at Edith B. Barril Riverfront Park.
The event was kicked off by Melody Phillips, Assistant Professor and Certified Culinary Medicine Expert, to discuss this week’s topic: What Makes Healthy Food Healthy? Some people try to eat healthy as part of their resolutions as they head into the new year. Phillips went into detail about what these health foods mean and how effective they are in our daily lives.
After discussion, all attendees split into two groups and walked the trail in different directions. After walking for about 50 minutes, everyone returned to the boat ramp gazebo. There, medical students prepared healthy snacks for everyone to enjoy.
Taylor Rice, a WVU sophomore medical student and member of the organization’s leadership team, made her own favorite muffin. She used wheat flour instead of white flour, oats instead of copious amounts of sugar, and unsweetened applesauce.
This event is usually held twice a month, on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Rice said everyone is welcome to participate locally or virtually. She added that people from multiple counties are participating and even out-of-state families are logging on to participate.
Commenting on the importance of hosting this event to the community, Rice said: to do it. So events like today are days when members of the community can come and ask questions and meet doctors. Rice added that these events are not only a way for community members to get their questions answered, but also a way to bring the community together to engage in lifestyle changes.
