Washington, USA — If you use TikTok, Joel Barbell, he is widely known as a “medical shady legend”. Bervell is on his way to becoming a doctor in this field where only 5% of his doctors are black.
He turned to social media to educate TikTok videos Expose racial disparities in health care and medicine. His videos reach over 110 million people and across all platforms he has over 600,000 followers.
And he’s doing it all while graduating from medical school.
Bervell is a Washington native, but lived and worked in the Portland metropolitan area. This spring, Barbell was an octopus, and she was one of hundreds who were awarded a $25,000 scholarship from an unlikely place: Barbell.

KGW had the opportunity to speak with Bervell and asked him if he thought he would receive such a large scholarship from Taco Bell.
“Absolutely not,” Berber laughs playfully. “Honestly, I was stunned when I found out. They actually beat my parents and all my teachers were there. I was in the clinic that day. I walked outside and suddenly there was my family and all my friends were my medical school instructors.
He is currently studying Orthopedic Surgery at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland and plans to graduate from medical school in 2024. He knew from the beginning that medical school would be difficult financially.
“So being able to get this kind of financial support means the world for me and for other supporters,” Berber said. “Because it allows me to focus on what’s important. This is working, getting good grades and being prepared for the future so I can go out into the world and make a real difference.”
Bervell was named the top voice for change by TikTok last year. He works with White House medical leaders and is a non-profit co-founder. hug.
Joel graduated from Yale University and became the first black medical student at Washington State University.
