Charles III is known for many things, but being a fitness enthusiast is one of his lesser-known traits.
However, the monarch is known to follow an army fitness routine called 5BX and was once nicknamed “The Goat” by Queen Camilla because he loves walking.
With that in mind, mirrorof Amber O’Connor wanted to learn more about the routine and try out the workouts for herself.

“5BX is a fitness plan created in the early ’60s by the Canadian military,” she said.
“It’s an 11-minute plan with six levels that include a variety of exercises. Each level increases in difficulty, and the exercises include running on the spot, sit-ups, and push-ups,” she said.
“Originally, the Canadian military was designed because they found many pilots to be overweight, often based in remote areas with minimal access to fitness equipment.
“It was a way for them to achieve a good level of fitness, but in a minimal amount of time.”

As Penny said, the workouts are very similar to modern HIIT classes, so it’s easy to know what to expect in terms of movement.
As you can see, the plan contains numerous charts, each featuring 5 sets of exercises.
“But if there’s a move you don’t like, you’re out of luck. Each chart prescribes similar moves, but with modifications to increase the difficulty.
“For example, each chart contains several variations of a pushup, and at the end we challenge you to do a chest tap and clap pushup.”
Amber spent a few days experimenting with Chart 3 to get an idea of how difficult the workout was, and it wasn’t easy.
“For me, the third chart solved the Goldilocks problem. Not too easy, not too hard, just right.
“The stretches, sit-ups and back extensions felt comfortable. The only thing I didn’t like was push-ups, which is my weak point.
“That said, I thought running in place would be a hassle, so I decided to skip this and run a mile instead, as my plans allowed.”
