SALT LAKE CITY — October is the time to get your flu shot ready for the holidays and the next flu season.
Dr Tamara Sheffield, Senior Medical Director of Preventive Medicine at Intermountain Healthcare, said the recent flu season in Australia gives an idea of what to expect here.
“What we’ve seen in the Southern Hemisphere is the early start of the flu season, a much more severe season than we’ve seen in many years,” Sheffield said.
Influenza vaccine is recommended for children 6 months and older. Sheffield said this year, the Centers for Disease Control is recommending that people over the age of 65 get her Fluzone High-Dose Quadrivalent, Flublok Quadrivalent, or Fluad Quadrivalent vaccine.
“Their immune system ages just like the rest of the body, so they don’t even respond to the stimulus of the vaccine. And we want to make sure the vaccine provokes a sufficient immune response, so it’s a higher That’s why you need a dose,” Sheffield said.
She said getting a flu shot is more important than ever. “Our hospitals could be overwhelmed again when we see people sick with the flu or COVID. We need to protect people from both,” she said.
Like many workplaces, KSL Broadcast House recently opened a flu vaccination clinic.
