Sure, I should have planned more, but I’m curious if any OMAAT readers feel the same way, or have any recommendations.
It’s hard to get protein after exercise at a hotel!
I enjoy working out because it’s a great mental distraction. I do that almost every day when I’m at home. When traveling, on the other hand, it’s not as consistent. However, there is one thing that puzzles me about working out on the move…
Some hotels have great gyms with equipment costing hundreds of thousands of dollars and full-time trainers. But when I ask if there’s a place in the hotel where I can get a protein shake (assuming I’m lifting weights), I usually say yes. I met him with a blank look.
This is not a problem in city hotels as you only need to stop at the drug store. But if you’re in a remote location, it’s not so easy. Sure, you could work out before eating and then take your protein, but I personally don’t like that.
Although I typically travel in warmer climates, I like to work out during the day when I need the most mental rest and when the outside is least comfortable. Ideally, I like to work out and then have a protein shake for lunch.
But for some reason it’s nearly impossible to find in most hotels. I can count on one hand how many times I’ve stayed at a full-service hotel where protein shakes are readily available. Conversely, a limited-service establishment without a restaurant often has a restaurant in its take-out area.
The last full-service hotel I stayed at for protein shakes was the Waldorf Astoria Maldives, ironically given its remoteness.
I would also like to share a quick funny anecdote. Four Seasons He remembers staying at Los Hers Cabos and calling the front desk to ask if there was a place on the premises to buy Protein Hers shakes. I was connected to in room dining and was told there were no protein shakes but protein cookies. To my surprise, I made it clear that I understood them correctly.
They claimed they had protein cookies and asked how many we wanted. I was at Ford, so I asked for two. What arrived in the room is as follows… (laughs). I hate waste, so I’ll admit that these cookies gradually “vanished” during our stay…in fact nullified most of the fitness benefits we had.
Anyway, if you’re a hotelier reading this, it would be nice to have some sort of protein shake available at your hotel all the time. This is an easy monetization opportunity and would add value, at least for me. This can come in the form of pre-packaged protein shakes or simply protein powders that can be used to make protein shakes at the pool bar.
I’m a bit confused as to why this isn’t more common. So Westin will lend you your training equipment, but won’t they sell you protein shakes?
i think i need to prepare better
Not all hotels will suddenly accommodate you all night, so I think you need to be well prepared. For obvious reasons, it’s not practical to travel with a protein shake in your carry-on.
One option is to travel with a protein bar. My problem with protein bars is that they are high in calories and/or low in protein (at least compared to other types of shakes).Naturally, at home I’m a fan of fair life protein shake 42 grams (Personally, I’m a fan of vanilla).
I think I can travel with protein powder, but I am hesitant to take protein powder with me when I travel abroad. i dunno…
As I posed the question, I thought maybe someone would come up with an idea that I hadn’t thought of.
Conclusion
Many hotels invest heavily in gyms, but protein shakes and protein bars can be hard to come by. Not the most important topic in the world, but I tend to think it’s important to express this kind of preference. Because that could cause the hotel to add this kind of thing.
After all, if no one asks, the hotel may not know. Or maybe I’m the only one who can appreciate this and I’m just doing something wrong. In that case, I also appreciate your comments to let the hotel management know that it is okay for them to ignore me. 😉
Am I the only one who wants hotels to sell protein shakes? What’s your protein solution for those who exercise while traveling?
