Why a Global Testing Company Wants a Stronger Presence in Germany

Safety first in drug manufacturing. Clinical trials are part of ensuring safety, but so are companies that provide testing and development services. Element Materials is a major player in this business, operating approximately 270 facilities worldwide, serving safety and testing for the pharmaceutical and various other industries. But sometimes the world isn’t enough. Element plans to further expand its business.

Speaking to The Medicine Maker about the expansion plans, Elisabeth Lackner, Element’s chief scientific officer, explained that the goal is to meet demand. “In some regions, the industry needs even greater capacity. In Europe, our footprint is relatively small and we plan to expand that footprint through mergers and acquisitions.” Element’s new acquisition mission comes at an interesting time for the company. Less than half a year has passed since the acquisition. The buyer is Singapore-based investment firm Temasek, a self-proclaimed provider of ‘catalyst capital’.

Germany is a special target for Element. Despite Germany’s enormous position in pharmaceutical manufacturing, Element only operates 13 facilities there. This stacks up against 41 in the UK, 12 in Sweden, 12 in Canada, and 13 across the Megarich provinces of Persia to give a sense of balance. bay.

Expansion of facilities means expansion of personnel. This is now a potential headache for any company. Throwing job ads into the post-COVID job market, it shifted the pain of hiring from job seekers to prospective employers. But Luckner isn’t worried.

“Our advantage is that we move quickly,” she says. “We are a science-driven company that prioritizes growth over hierarchy. People working in her science field appreciate this, and it should make hiring in that field a little easier as a result.” .”

So the hiring concerns are solvable, but what about strategy? As far as pharmaceuticals and healthcare go, Lackner points to three key growth areas for his Element to pursue. They are cell and gene therapy, macromolecules, and medical devices. Life Sciences already makes up a quarter of Element’s business and is the fastest growing division within the company. Despite being founded only a few years ago, the company’s work in the pharmaceutical industry is rapidly upending the aerospace, oil and gas base. Perhaps some might argue that it is a sign of dawn.century of biology” Time will tell.

Between my undergraduate degree in English and my master’s degree in publishing, I was in Shanghai teaching, learning, and getting extremely lost. Now I’m opening my mind to quite another rabbit hole: the pharmaceutical industry. I must say that it is very difficult to judge.
