Whooping cough case confirmed at Blue Springs High School
Jackson County Public Health has confirmed a case of pertussis at Blue Springs High School. Symptoms commonly known as whooping cough include a runny nose, mild cough, and severe coughing fits. “Whooping cough is a contagious respiratory disease that may initially look like the common cold,” said Bridget Shafer, health director for Jackson County Public Health. “This disease can cause very serious complications, especially for infants and people with chronic conditions such as asthma.” The health department and school district are working together to prevent further infections. Health authorities advise early antibiotic treatment and vaccination as the best preventative measures. Symptoms: Runny nose Mild cough that gradually worsens Low-grade fever Coughing attacks that can cause vomiting and nausea Distinctive whistling sounds during coughing episodes Difficulty breathing (especially in infants and young children) Cough that lasts up to 10 weeks
