The WHO has formally requested China to provide detailed information on the increase in respiratory illnesses and reports of cluster pneumonia in children.
In a press conference on November 13, 2023, Chinese authorities from the National Health Commission reported an increase in the incidence of respiratory diseases in China. Chinese authorities attribute the increase to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the spread of known pathogens such as influenza. mycoplasma pneumoniae (a common bacterial infection that usually affects young children), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes coronavirus disease (COVID-19)). Officials emphasized the need to strengthen disease surveillance in health facilities and communities, and to strengthen the health system’s case management capacity.
On November 21, the media and ProMED reported an outbreak of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China. It is unclear whether these are related to the overall increase in respiratory infections previously reported by Chinese authorities or to another event.
On 22 November, WHO, through the International Health Regulations mechanism, requested additional epidemiological and clinical information, as well as laboratory results on the reported pediatric cluster. Also, influenza, SARS-CoV-2, RSV, mycoplasma pneumonia, and the current burden on the health care system. WHO is also in touch with clinicians and scientists through existing technical partnerships and networks in China.
Since mid-October, northern China has reported an increase in influenza-like illnesses compared to the same period in the previous three years. China has systems in place to collect information on trends in influenza, influenza-like illness, RSV, and SARS-CoV-2, which are reported to platforms such as the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System.
While WHO is requesting this additional information, we encourage people in China to follow measures to reduce the risk of respiratory illness, including vaccination recommendations. Stay away from sick people. Stay home when you are sick. Receive testing and treatment as necessary. Wear a mask if necessary. Ensure good ventilation. and regular hand washing.
WHO will continue to provide updated information.
