As Vice President Kamala Harris ramps up her presidential campaign, she is making clear how she will tackle the major issues facing the country.
In speeches and rallies, Harris has voiced support for continuing many of President Joe Biden’s policies, including lowering drug prices, forgiving student loan debt and eliminating so-called junk fees. But she has made it clear that she holds her own views on some key issues, particularly Israel’s treatment of Gaza residents in its war with Hamas.
Harris’ campaign noted that in a departure from her 2020 presidential campaign, she is distancing herself from many of her more progressive positions, including support for single-payer health care and a ban on fracking.
Harris is also trying to walk a delicate balance between taking ownership of the administration’s accomplishments while avoiding being held jointly responsible by voters for its shortcomings, and is expected to bring her own style to bear on issues from abortion to the economy to immigration.
Trump’s early campaign speeches have hinted at his priorities, but he has mostly made general points and has yet to unveil a more nuanced plan. Like Biden, Trump plans to contrast his vision for America with that of former President Donald Trump. (See Trump’s campaign pledges here.)
“Right now, I think we’re faced with a choice between two visions for our nation: one that focuses on the future, and one that focuses on the past,” she told members of the historically Black sorority Zeta Phi Beta at an event in Indianapolis in late July. “With your support, I’m fighting for the future of our nation.”
Here’s what we know about Harris’ views.
