On any given day, you’ll likely find Shari Slamka hard at work in the kitchen.

“At the end of the day, you have the feeling that you’ve done something constructive,” she said.
Slamka hasn’t always felt comfortable around others: About 20 years ago, doctors diagnosed her with bipolar disorder.
“When you’re manic, you just want it, you just want it. It’s not good to be in that state,” she said.
Slamka is from Waukesha. Spring City Corner Clubhouse She learned to be accepted.
“I’m not afraid to say I have a mental illness. I’m not afraid. I am who I am,” she said.

“Humans are social people — social creatures. Humans need meaningful work. They need meaningful relationships,” says human resources expert Sami Kelly.
Spring City Corner Clubhouse Helping people with mental illness find employment, continue their education and end isolation.
“Getting them here and getting them out into the community is the biggest issue,” Clubhouse Director Sharon Dixon said.
Dixon says Spring City Corner Clubhouse The membership is 300. There are seven other similar clubhouses in the state.
Spring City Corner Clubhouse celebrates 25 years in Waukesha
Thursday marked the organization’s 25th anniversary, a moment made all the more poignant given that four years ago, everyone was in isolation.
“The pandemic and the isolation have caused us to lose members to suicide or not coming back,” Dixon said. “It’s been a very tough time for the Clubhouse.”
“Without Spring City, I would never be in the position I am in today, that’s the real truth,” Slamka said.
Spring City Corner Clubhouse It is located in downtown Waukesha at the intersection of Wisconsin and Grand Streets and is funded by the United Way and the Waukesha County Health and Human Services Department.
