AMARILLO, Texas (KVII) — More than 8.5 million Americans ages 12 and older report prescription drug misuse.
Walmart will hold in-person drug disposal events at select stores nationwide this Saturday.
This includes stores off West Amarillo Boulevard.
Saturday is National Prescription Drug Collection Day.
It aims to encourage people to safely remove unwanted medicines from their homes, rather than simply throwing them in the trash or flushing them down the toilet.
Pharmacist Cerise Pushgoda says this is one way to avoid people confusing old and new medicines.
“So you have medicine in your cabinet, you get sick and you’re desperate, and you pick it up, but it’s expired, it’s lost some of its potency, and it’s not even suitable for its intended use. It literally got worse because of the chemicals,” Pushgoda said.
The event will be held at the Walmart on West Amarillo Boulevard on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
For those who can’t make it in time, prescriptions can be picked up at the Walmart store in Coulter, SW 45th and Osage during normal pharmacy business hours.
