Vitamin B12 is found in many animal products such as meat, cheese and eggs. It performs a variety of important functions in the body, including helping to make red blood cells. If you don’t get enough B12, you won’t be able to make the healthy blood cells needed to carry oxygen around your body.
His family took him to the emergency department because he hadn’t eaten properly for three days and started vomiting.
“Patient was in normal health until behavioral changes began 2 months prior to presentation,” the case study explains.
“According to his wife, the patient became more aggressive, slept less, stopped going to work, and became isolated. He also had episodes of hallucinations and short-term memory loss.
“The above symptoms were accompanied by general weakness, mainly in the lower extremities.

“Weakness was associated with pain. The patient was confined to a wheelchair.
“Over the past two months, the patient has seen many doctors, but no clear diagnosis has been made.”
He underwent a neurological examination, during which he said, “I was unable to support myself while standing,” which yielded no answer.
Later, laboratory tests revealed “undetectable levels” of vitamin B12 in his blood.

The study concludes:
“There was a big change in his behavior.
“Five months after starting treatment, the patient returned for a second follow-up with significant improvements in gait, muscle strength and cognitive function.”
Six months after starting treatment, the patient was able to walk and drive independently.
