Valley stylist offers ‘Compassion Appointments’ for clients battling depression

MESA — A few years ago, Amber Ortiz decided to open a smaller hair salon to support her clients on a personal level.

Ortiz recently launched a new silent service.

“They’re like me and you. They’re like everyone. They have normal jobs, but they hide it really well,” Ortiz said.

Compassion Reservations caters to people battling severe depression.

“They come in with their hair messed up and tangled so much that they feel like they can’t see,” Ortiz explained.

Whether it’s minutes or hours, Ortiz carefully examines every part.

“I just listen to music, I light a candle, I sit here and I just do my work, and sometimes I touch,” Ortiz explains. They know everything will be fine. ”

She continues, “With a little time and patience, they can be detangled, easier to maintain, and they’re back to their old lives.”

Ortiz’s empathy for her customers is reflected in the pop of yellow that her salon is named after.

“We used to call him Lemon. Sour Lemon, Lemon Drop,” Ortiz smiles. “He was fine, we say, he was my mother’s favorite.”

She said she didn’t know her youngest brother, Lucas Alexander Romero, was depressed when he was 23. He died by suicide in 2016.

“I wanted to turn something bad into something good, so I created lemon bars,” Ortiz said.

Her mission in life is to prioritize mental health and make lemonade out of lemons.

“It’s in the past and I hope they can move forward,” Ortiz said.
