Valley mental health professional gives advice on navigating the time change

Fishersville, Virginia (WHSV) – Summertime ends Sunday, November 6th.

For many people, that also means it gets dark on the way home from work.

That shift can be difficult to get used to. For many people, the change in time causes seasonal affective disorder.

Maintaining a consistent schedule, practicing good sleep habits, exercising, and taking time to relax can help you make the switch, says Andrea Kendall, a certified clinical social worker at Augusta Health.

“It’s not a substitute for extra sun, but it’s important to get some sun on purpose. Whether it’s five or ten minutes a day, get outside in a bunch and get some sun and fresh air.” Get some air,” says Kendall. Said.

Getting more sleep is always good, but changing your schedule can impair your normal functioning. Give yourself time to adjust.

“It’s normal to take a month or so to get used to this change because we use routines and structures and predictability to manage our worries and all that, so we’re embracing change. It’s hard to do,” she says. she said.

However, if you can’t adapt to that period, talk to your doctor. Kendall said he might recommend medications to help him get through the winter months.
