Urgent action needed to address emergency and surgical care gaps

Warning the authors about new papers published in the March issue of the World Health Organization will require strengthening and expanding integrated emergency, critical and surgical care globally.

Their study found that emergency medical conditions such as heart attacks and strokes caused deaths of around 27 million people, and disability or early deaths (measured as DALYS) in 2019 resulted in more than a billion years of healthy lives being lost. Low-income countries were particularly affected.

Surgical conditions requiring surgical intervention, such as road traffic injuries and cancer, have caused approximately 18 million deaths and approximately 620 million Daris.

Furthermore, conditions categorized into both categories such as postpartum hemorrhage and appendicitis resulted in approximately 7 million deaths and over 300 million dalys (2).

In 2023, members of the World Health Organization pledged to strengthen their health systems. Our study highlights the need to coordinate and connect health care services at all levels, from primary care to specialized tertiary care. This is essential to address a significant proportion of the world’s major deaths and morbidity. ”

In particular, this study highlights the need for rapid, coordinated, and improved interdisciplinary care for maternal bleeding, which is the main cause of death in maternal. In 2019, there were 46,429 deaths and more than 3 million Dalis worldwide. To save a life, immediate resuscitation, such as ligating the uterine artery or hysterectomy, and potentially surgical procedures may be required.

Similarly, this study identifies appendicitis as an emergency and surgical condition that requires urgent attention. In 2019, appendicitis killed 33,341 people and accounted for nearly 1.5 million Dalis worldwide. Fast recognition and surgical intervention are essential to prevent severe complications such as facilitation and peritonitis.

Dr. Rocco Friebel said: “Emergency, serious and surgical conditions place significant economic burdens as economic productivity losses are projected to be USD 12.3 trillion between 2015 and 2030.

“Major public and private investments are essential to strengthen the planning and delivery of these life-saving care services and to ensure a resilience and safety public health system.”
