One in five nursing homes in the United States is rated “excellent.”

washington, November 12, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — U.S. News & World Report, the world’s leading authority on health care rankings and consumer advice, today announced Best Nursing Home Ratings of 2025. The 2025 rating includes ratings of approximately 15,000 nursing homes in the United States.

Nursing homes provide short-term or long-term care and help with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, medication management, rehabilitation, and chronic disease management.

In the latest edition, less than 20% of U.S. nursing homes evaluated were recognized as “Best Nursing Homes” in the categories of “short-term rehabilitation,” “long-term care,” or both. Specifically, 1,637 cities (out of 5,147) and 715 counties (out of 1,687) in the United States have at least one “Best Nursing Home.”

A U.S. News assessment found that nearly half of U.S. nursing homes are not complying with federal regulations that require them to have a registered nurse for at least eight hours a year. Among nursing homes that did not comply, the average nursing home was understaffed for 15 days.
