Q: When and how were you diagnosed?
a: My parents just thought I was a weird kid because I made a lot of noises and made random movements like turning my head and bending my fingers. My psychiatrist told me that children usually don’t randomly squeak because they “feel like they need to” while doing everyday things.
However, tics do not necessarily mean Tourette’s disease, as tics are actually somewhat common in children. Tourette’s disease usually occurs when a person has multiple physical and vocal tics. I had tics all my childhood, but one day when I was about 15 years old, I developed a really, really bad verbal tic. It was literally overnight. One day I woke up and while playing a video game I started saying, “I’m a boxer.” Within a few hours, I couldn’t stop swearing and saying very offensive things. I went to the doctor that week and was referred to a psychiatrist, but that appointment didn’t last for months.
A few days after the doctor’s appointment, I had a very severe tic attack at school, had many different tics at once, contorted my body in various ways, and ended up in the hospital being sedated. It has become. As a result, my psychiatrist’s appointment was rescheduled to the next day, and I received a diagnosis during my psychiatrist’s appointment.
