Three months after 2025, the US surpasses the total number of measles in all countries last year.
So far, at least 308 measles cases have been reported in the US in the US, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2024 there were 285 cases of measles. The high numbers are driven by large outbreaks in Texas, New Mexico and Oklahoma.
In the United States, an average of approximately 179 measles cases have been reported each year in the year in the years since measles were declared excluded. There were an average of eight outbreaks per year, ranging from 1 to 25 per year, but at least 60% of all cases reported in most years are linked to outbreaks. However, the worst cases each year remain below 50. 2025 was the fifth year since 2000, and it was only the third year when outbreaks led to over 100 cases and outbreaks led to over 200 cases. Others were Disneyland outbreaks that began in 2014 and 2019, which occurred within weeks of the nearly year-long outbreak in New York ended in the US.
Last month, Texas announced its first death in the outbreak. This is a school-age child who has not been vaccinated and has no underlying conditions. New Mexico health officials said last week they were investigating the cause of death of unvaccinated people who tested positive for measles. Lee County residents were not seeking health care.
