Ubrana-Champaign area-based Carle Health said Health Alliance and sister company FirstCarolinacare were shutting down early next year due to financial struggles competing with other for-profit health insurance companies.
“In recent years, the health insurance industry has changed dramatically, especially for provider-owned insurance companies,” Carl Health announced its planned closure on February 25th. “Coupled with medical inflation, rising costs of prescription drugs, increased use of health services, increased chronic medical conditions and increased demand for technology, a wide network has put a significant financial burden on these organizations.”

“My office will stand up to help in all ways in vocational training and recruitment efforts for affected employees,” Senator Rose said. “Continuity of care and access to reliable physicians must be a priority as thousands of local members are forced to find new insurance companies.”
Senator Rose said he has already connected with the Group Health Insurance Director of Central Management Services to see what health care options are available to ensure that his team will then register the affected family registration cycle in May.
Health Alliance Insurance Plans was first launched in 1980 as Carlecare HMO. It was renamed Health Alliance in 1989 and was reorganized as a commercial insurance company owned by Carle Clinic.
Health Alliance is the largest healthcare provider in lower Illinois.
Approximately 250,000 people are covered by insurance through a company in Champaign. First Carolinacare in North Carolina will process claims until the end of the year.
