Dr. Elahe Nezami, Miller School Online MPH Program Director, talks about the growing demand for public health professionals in the United States
The public health profession is expected to see solid growth in the coming years.
According to research from the University of Louisville, employment of health education professionals and community health workers is projected to grow 17% from 2020 to 2030, with an average of more than 16,000 new job openings each year. This is significantly faster than the average for all professions.
This outlook is being driven by the growing demand for health education, epidemiology, environmental health, and policy professionals.
With global challenges such as pandemics, mental health crises, climate change, natural disasters, income and social inequalities, and increases in chronic disease, public health professionals have an opportunity to positively impact their communities while advancing their careers. I believe that this number is increasing.
Where are public health professionals needed?
Public health professionals can contribute to a wide range of roles at the intersection of health and wellness, community-based policy and services.
Beyond hospitals, clinics, and private medical practices, public health workers are in high demand in a variety of fields, including government, medical law, and nonprofit organizations. With the right education and training, these professionals are playing increasingly important roles in industries not traditionally associated with health and wellness, such as data analytics, business consulting, and urban planning.
