The real problem with Pete Rose’s legacy isn’t gambling.
You’ve probably already heard that Pete Rose passed away. Some say he was the “starter” that ultimately brought the Phillies their first World Series victory. Some people go out of their way to call him. “One of the greatest baseball players of all time.” all of that maybe However, the latter claim is, at the very least, blatantly hyperbolic. He was certainly a prolific hitter. I’ll give it to him.
Of course, most, if not all, of the memories covered in the media this past day are dominated by the fact that Pete Rose bet on games during his time in the league. He also lied about betting on games for years after the accusations occurred. Rose eventually admitted to gambling on baseball, even betting on games he played in. (Rose categorically denied ever betting on his own team. Believe what you want to believe.) ).
But there are more troubling allegations regarding Pete Rose that many seem to have forgotten. And no, I’m not talking about when Pete Rose went to federal prison for income tax evasion, but that definitely happened and he was not only a liar, but a fraud.
Let’s go back to August 2017. The Phillies were holding Pete Rose Weekend to celebrate the man who was permanently banned from Major League Baseball for his gambling. The Phillies were ready to hand out Pete Rose bobbleheads. There was also a commemorative print of Pete Rose. And the Phillies were scheduled to add Pete Rose’s name to the Phillies Wall of Fame that weekend. But then the Phillies canceled everything.

Days before the Phillies canceled Pete Rose Weekend, court documents released show a woman accused Pete Rose of having sex with her when she was in her mid-30s and not yet 16 years old. It was done. But that’s not the most alarming part. The most worrying part is that when Pete Rose was asked about it, he said there was no doubt that it was her. It was 16, no under 16. (Conveniently, 16 was the “age of consent” in the state where this girl lived.) So “one of the greatest baseball players of all time” admitted to having sex with a child. Oh, he was married at the time and had two kids. But hey, details.
The allegations emerged in a defamation lawsuit filed by Pete Rose against John Dowd, the former Major League Baseball special prosecutor who investigated Rose’s gambling scandal. The lawsuit centered on comments Dowd made on a Philadelphia-area radio show in 2015. Now on airMr. Dowd said Pete Rose’s friend Michael Bertolini “told us that not only did he place bets, he placed bets on young girls.” [Pete Rose] 12 to 14 year olds during spring training…don’t you think it’s wonderful? So every time you do that, it’s statutory rape. ”
A judge ultimately dismissed the case after Mr. Dowd and Mr. Rose reached some sort of out-of-court agreement. But those damn documents live on. So it will be interesting to see exactly how the Phillies will remember, honor and recognize Pete Rose during the Phillies playoff game this weekend at Citizens Bank Park.
I’m sure I’ll get some hate mail for bringing up Pete Rose’s dirty laundry so soon after his death (link to reader mail is above!). But if I think having sex with a child, and Bertolini’s claims via Dowd are to be believed, having sex with a 12-year-old is a little more serious than betting on a baseball game… Please call me crazy.
