The Hon Greg Hunt appointed Turner Institute Advisory Council Chair

Hon Greg Hunt is Chair of the Advisory Board of the Turner Institute.

Monash University is pleased to announce the appointment of former Federal Minister of Health and Elderly Care Hong Greg Hunt as founding chairman of the Turner Brain and Mental Health Advisory Board.

The Turner Institute is a global leader in research dedicated to preventative brain and mental health research, treatment and education.

Simon McKeon, Chancellor of Monash University, welcomed Hunt’s appointment and said he would bring a wealth of knowledge and experience in international health policy and research to the position.

“Mr Hunt is an avid mental health advocate and former federal minister of health and aged care, and his vast expertise in health care policy has made the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health one of the world’s leading research institutions. I assure you it will,” McKeon said.

Hunt, who will retire after the 2022 federal election, said the role allowed him to continue working in the mental health field.

“I am delighted that Turner has been invited to assist in building the role of research and community. We have the ability to become one of the world’s leading centers for ,” Hunt said.

“Turner set a vision focused on applying their research to clinical practice. This approach could make a big difference in the lives of people with mental health problems. is a long-standing and deeply personal passion that stems from my family’s experience growing up where my mother suffered from bipolar disorder,” he said.

Director of the Turner Institute, Professor Kim Cornishwelcomed the appointment of Mr. Hunt.

Professor Cornish said, “Greg’s deep understanding of the mental health landscape in Australia and his passion for empowering communities to thrive have made him an influential candidate for the first Chair of the Turner Advisory Board. is a candidate.

“Greg will lead a group of strategic advisors who bring strong skills and networks to health and medical research, government, industry, philanthropy and hands-on experience.”

Hunt said Turner’s “living lab” study will follow thousands of residents of Melbourne’s southeastern suburbs for 10 years to monitor and treat mental illness, dementia and other brain signs. The condition was an example of groundbreaking research being performed.

“At the same time, there is significant room to focus on substantive areas such as suicide prevention, treatment of eating disorders, age-based mental health, and indigenous mental health,” he said.

Hunt said he wants to focus his philanthropic efforts on mental health through the Turner Institute.

“At the moment, we want to focus our philanthropic efforts on a major role in the mental health field,” he said. “Within its field, Turner has established itself as a unique opportunity to collaborate with universities, researchers, practitioners, and communities of lived experience.”

Professor Christina Mitchell AO, dean of the School of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, said Hunt’s appointment will continue to advance the Turner Institute’s world-leading research.
