A study by Dutch health charity Diabetes Fonds has revealed that the Dutch consume twice as much sugar as they realise.
On average, people think they eat the equivalent of 7.4 sugar cubes a day but actually consume more than 14, underestimating true consumption by 10 kilograms per person per year, broadcaster NOS reported on Friday.
Three-quarters of our sugar intake doesn’t come from sweets or biscuits, but from soups, sauces and herb mixes used as flavour enhancers. Research shows that 75% of people who cook use ready-made sauces or spice mixes at least once a week, but rarely check the ingredients list.
The charity says 1.1 million people in the Netherlands currently have type 2 diabetes and a further 1.4 million are at risk of developing the condition.
