In the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were several mental hospitals around New York state. Over the years, people have willingly and sometimes unwillingly checked into these facilities for treatment of a variety of conditions. For depression, schizophrenia, and even homosexuality, some are admitted to hospital, while others are never discharged.
One of New York State’s most iconic psychiatric hospitals was a massive building called Hudson River State Hospital on nearly 300 acres in Poughkeepsie. Abandoned since 2003, much of the campus has been demolished. Let’s see what was left before the demolition.

Known as Hudson River State Hospital, the imposing building is less impressive today as much of the facility has been demolished since it was abandoned in 2003. Before it was demolished, a group of urban explorers took the chance to enter the building and try to photograph what they saw. .
Part of the former hospital site has already been converted into a shopping plaza, with plans to refurbish the main ‘Kirkbride Building’. Before its demolition, it had several buildings, including an activity center with a swimming pool, theater and bowling alley.
Hudson River State Hospital had a male and female wing, as well as its own morgue, power plant, and two churches. Opened in the 1930s, Lyon House housed violent and criminal insanity patients. This building is no longer built.
