by Universalwellnesssystems

Deciding to exercise is one thing, but putting that thought into action is another. This is especially true if you live in a city with few sidewalks, parks, or recreational facilities. Some locations are better suited for regular travel than others. In a recent report, the personal finance website wallet hub We’ve selected the best cities for individuals looking to get (or stay) active.

To determine this ranking, WalletHub looked at the 100 most populous cities in the United States and compared them in the categories of “Budget & Participation” and “Sports & Outdoors.” Experts analyzed both aspects using 35 weighted indicators. Budget and participation included criteria such as average monthly fees for health clubs in the city and sports clubs per person. Sports & Outdoors, on the other hand, consisted of metrics such as cycling and walkability scores.

Each indicator was then rated on a 100-point scale, with 100 being the most ideal for active residents. WalletHub then calculated a weighted average for each city across all 35 metrics to determine its “Active Lifestyle Score.” The final scores were ranked in the list below.

This study shows that Honolulu is a great place to live an active lifestyle. Hawaii’s capital’s extensive community sports areas, including baseball fields, skate parks, and volleyball courts, helped propel Hawaii to the top of the list. Additionally, Honolulu’s easy access to the ocean makes it a great place for water sports. Plus, the city’s bike share program, parks, and numerous hiking trails make it easy to get into the habit of exercising.

New York City came in second place primarily because of its walkability. As America’s second most walkable city (after San Francisco), it’s easy for people to stay active on a daily basis. The city also has many recreational facilities, including dance schools, swimming pools, and basketball courts.

San Francisco ranks third on the list of places that promote physical activity. In addition to being the most walkable city in the United States, it also boasts an impressive network of hiking trails, according to WalletHub.
