New research published in psychological science found that agent-like narcissism was positively correlated with self-reported and objectively measured testosterone levels.

“I have been studying narcissism as a personality trait for several years. Recent findings indicate that narcissism may be a multidimensional construct,” said the study authors. Marcin ZazienkowskiProfessor of the University of Warsaw.

“I was interested in the biological correlates of different aspects of narcissism and predicted that only so-called agent-like narcissism would be positively associated with testosterone levels.”

Grandiose narcissism is divided into active narcissism (“aggressiveness, grandiosity, superiority”), which is the tendency to self-promote for the sake of gaining the admiration of others and social influence, and hostile narcissism (“this is It refers to reactive strategies in response to threats to one’s self-esteem and status as a means of recovering from what has been threatened.Agent narcissism represents the default narcissist strategy.

This pre-enrolled study included 283 Polish men with a mean age of 22.84 years. Testosterone levels were assessed by blood draw. Participants arrived at the lab between 7:30 am and 9:30 am. They were instructed to “abstain from alcohol for at least 24 hours before the blood draw.” Consuming caffeinated beverages, foods, or drugs, or exercising at least 15 hours before. And smoke at least 3 hours before. The researchers obtained two measures of his basal testosterone, including total testosterone levels and free testosterone levels.

After blood collection, participants proceeded to the Qualtrics study. They completed a number of questionnaires on narcissism, including 1) the Polish version of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, which focused on agent-like narcissism. 2) the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Questionnaire that measures active and hostile narcissism; 3) an abbreviated version of the 5-factor Narcissism Inventory that produces scores for Aggressive, Antagonistic, and Neurotic Narcissism; The participant also provided a self-rated testosterone rating, on a scale of 1 (very low) to 25 (very high) how he performed compared to other men.

“We looked at how the aspects of narcissism identified in previous research are related to testosterone, which is considered the ‘social hormone’ that drives dominant behaviors and motivations,” Zajen said. Kowski told Cypost.

“In one sample of men, we found that one aspect of narcissism, agentiness, was associated with elevated testosterone. People with higher agent narcissism rated their testosterone levels positively.”

Antagonistic and neurotic narcissism were not associated with either testosterone measure.

Are there any questions that still need answers? “We only tested men and the male reproductive hormone testosterone,” Zazienkowski said. It may be investigated whether it is associated with behavior.”
