Defense attorneys are asking the court to transfer the defendant, a Huntsville man charged with murdering a woman in a car in Decatur, to a mental health facility.
Preston Lamar Nelson, 38, should be moved to Tuscaloosa’s Taylor Hardin Rescue Medical Facility, according to attorneys.
Attorney’s motion says Nelson has mental health problems and is having behavioral problems while in prison in Morgan County. I recommended that
Nelson’s defense team had previously said in court that he had “very limited memories” of the day he allegedly murdered Thane, and that he was “experiencing auditory and hallucinatory hallucinations” at the time.
Decatur police say Nelson accelerated rapidly after parking near the store entrance and hit Thane, who was walking behind the car. Nelson then accelerated until his car collided with another, sandwiching Thane between the two, police said.
A witness told WAAY 31 Nelson tried to drive away, but his car stalled. Nelson eventually got out of the car and began rubbing Thane’s blood on himself, witnesses said.
A judge has yet to rule on Nelson’s motion to transfer. Meanwhile, he remains in the Morgan County Jail on $500,000 bail.
