A study by Ontario researchers has found that some cannabis oils sold in Canada are inaccurately labeled for THC and CBD.
While numerous studies have looked at the accuracy of labeling for cannabis flower, edible products and some extracts, this may be the first to look at legal cannabis oil.
in Case series studyResearchers from McMaster University and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton tested 30 cannabis oil products available on the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) website.
The amounts of THC and CBD in these products were then tested at McMaster University’s Centre for Microbial and Chemical Biology and compared to the amounts listed on the product labels.
While none of the products contained significantly more THC than the amount stated on the label, 12 of the 30 products tested were found to be outside the acceptable variation limits for THC, and three were outside the variation limits for CBD.
Of the 16 cannabis oils tested that had a THC content listed on the label of 2.5 mg/g or greater, seven had an acceptable variance of more than 15% below the listed content on the label.
Additionally, the study found that 10 of the 30 oil products had inconsistencies in the amounts of THC and CBD listed in the product descriptions on the OCS website.
Additionally, five products were found to have inconsistent listings of active THC/CBD and total THC/CBD. One product was listed as having 5 mg/g CBD but a secondary test found it to have 26 mg/g total CBD. Unlike products such as dried flower, the type of cannabis oil studied should typically have the same amount of active THC/CBD and total THC/CBD.
The researchers behind the study say their findings merit greater quality control from industry, but they also point out that the study was limited in scope. OCS is currently 50 Cannabis Oil The SKU is online.
