Michigan plans to build a new psychiatric hospital in Northville for $325 million to replace the aging adolescent psychiatric medical center.
Located at 18471 Haggerty Road, the new facility will serve approximately 200 patients currently admitted to the Hawthorne Center Adolescent Psychiatric Hospital and Westland’s Adult Psychiatric Hospital (Walter P. Reuser Psychiatric Hospital).
The Hawthorne Center, which opened in 1956, and the Walter Reuters Center, which opened in 1979, are in dire need of replacement, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will announce the locations of the new facilities on Monday. said in a statement. hospital.

According to MDHHS, once construction is complete, the new hospital will house adolescents and adults in two separate facilities, with shared administration and meal services.
During construction, staff and patients will be moved to another unit at Walter P. Reuser. The Christman Company has been hired as construction manager for the project, which is scheduled for completion in 2026.
The state budget for fiscal 2023 includes about $325 million for mental hospitals, using federal coronavirus aid to cover costs. According to State Budget Director Chris Harkins, Northville was chosen as the location for the new facility in part because of its existing relationships with community leaders.

Michigan currently operates five inpatient psychiatric hospitals serving approximately 650 patients. Besides the Hawthorne Center, the only juvenile psychiatric facility, the state operates adult hospitals Walter Reuters, Caro Center, and Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital.
The state also operates a forensic psychiatric center that evaluates and treats defendants found not guilty on the grounds of insanity or inability to stand trial.
