In response to the canine respiratory disease outbreak, Bernalillo County officials plan to hold a free vaccine clinic next week.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In response to an outbreak of canine respiratory disease, Bernalillo County officials will hold a free vaccine clinic next week.
The clinic will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. Officials said New Mexico has no confirmed positive cases but is offering these free Bordetella vaccinations as a “proactive precaution.”
Walk-up clinics will be held at the Resource Center located at 3001 2nd Street SW. Dogs and puppies are vaccinated against Bordetella on a first-come, first-served basis.
“Bordetella vaccination is one of several ways to reduce and protect dogs if canine respiratory syndrome makes its way to New Mexico,” officials said in a news release. “Animals must be vaccinated for at least two weeks before coming into contact with other animals. This includes areas such as dog parks, grooming facilities, and boarding centers.”
Symptoms of “canine respiratory syndrome” include, but are not limited to:
- difficulty breathing
- wheezing
- cough or sneeze
- heat
- discharge from the eyes and nose
- lethargy
- dehydration
- decreased appetite
Officials say if your dog has more than one of these symptoms, you should contact your veterinarian immediately.
