When producer Michael Coburn approached Sprained Brain as part of his production, Roots & Herbs Riddim The deejay, who participated in the compilation album, was attracted to the project given his agricultural background.
He contributed the title track to a 14-song set released on Cobain’s Reggae Vibes Productions. Also included are songs by Ginjah, Lenn Hammond, Parrable, and Kreation.
“Roots and herbs are from birth. Teach them from school, growing up with your grandmother, cutting off branches from lime trees and vines and orange trees. We grow in a rootsy way. “That comes out in the music,” he said.
Sprained Brain (real name Jeffrey Campbell) is from Clarendon and grew up in a family that made a living from farming. He is also a professional farmer and grows vegetables such as bok choy, carrots, lettuce, and okra on his farm.
But there was always time for music. The first “artists” Sprain Brain listened to were his uncles, who played songs by Garnet Silk and Professor Nutt.
As for the pros, his biggest influences are Sizzla, Spragga Benz, Beenie Man, and Chum.
Roots & Herb is Sprain Brain’s first release for Coburn, a veteran of the Big Apple reggae scene who has worked with artists such as Ky-Mani Marley, Courtney Melody and Ras Shiloh.
It’s only fitting that it’s inspired by the lifestyle he’s followed since he was young.
“I think it’s perfect, but I do my best to promote healthy eating habits,” Sprainbrain said.
