Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA) — Spartanburg’s newest mural is all about prioritizing mental health.
The colorful artwork that now dominates the street-side wall of Starbucks on the corner of Spring and Main Streets features multicultural faces, QR codes that link to mental health resources, and universal messages. you are important
This mural was curated by the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center in partnership with the Chapman Cultural Center.
Funding for this project was provided by a grant from the Mary Black Foundation.
“With this mural, I want people to get out of the community out of it, but also get a sense of connectedness, not just because of the language and language, but because they see themselves in the mural. Latino Outreach Specialist at the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center said:
The piece took about two years to plan and paint.
The planner told 7News that he wanted the mural to be visible to make the message more visible to the public.
“I’m grateful to have this place here. It’s very important because there’s a lot of traffic and people can see it,” said BIPOC and Latino Outreach Program Director at the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center. said Gia Quinones, “They can also read it in a language they understand.”
Artist Lauren Andrew, who spent countless hours planning the mural and took over 80 hours to create it, originally designed this piece in Hawaii.
“I think the message is very important. No matter who you are, what you’re going through, yeah, you matter,” Andrew said.
The Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center, the Chapman Cultural Center, and the City of Spartanburg will officially unveil and dedicate the mural on Monday, December 5 at 3:00 pm.
