Skin care: Doctor shares ‘most important vitamin’ for age-defying skin

by Universalwellnesssystems

Want glowing, vibrant, youthful-looking skin? Experts say a vitamin-rich diet could be the answer.

While effective skin care is essential, what you eat also plays a key role in creating enviable skin.

GB News spoke exclusively to doctors and dermatologists about the best vitamins for skin and the foods you can eat to get them.

Physician and nutritionist Dr. Indira Gissart says that vitamin C is the “most important vitamin” for youthful skin, as it plays a key role in collagen production.

Collagen is essential for skin, making up around 80% of our skin. It keeps skin firm, plump and supple, and plays a role in the skin’s natural renewal process.

As we age, our collagen levels decrease – in fact, by the time we reach our early 20s, our collagen levels are decreasing by about 1% each year.

So a collagen-boosting diet is essential for mature women who want to maintain their youthful glow.

“Collagen helps maintain a youthful appearance, improves skin elasticity and reduces wrinkles,” the expert said.

To get a diet rich in vitamin C, experts advise women to include citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, grapefruit and limes, as well as berries, kiwi and pineapple in their diet.

Also think about red peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes and potatoes.

Dr. Keena Emamian, beauty, skin and hair specialist at Aesthetic Medical Group and general practitioner, also weighed in on the most important vitamins for anti-aging skin.

She told GB News: “Our diet plays a big role in achieving our skin goals and eating a healthy, balanced diet and drinking plenty of water is really important.”

To get a vitamin-rich diet, experts recommended eating plenty of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.

For collagen-boosting vitamin C, Dr. Keana recommends eating lots of carrots, citrus fruits, broccoli, and potatoes.

She adds: “Meanwhile, leafy greens such as spinach and kale are rich in skin-nourishing vitamin K and anti-inflammatory compounds.”

Experts also stressed the importance of taking B vitamins, including vitamin B9, for skin hydration, collagen production and cell regeneration.

To reap these skin-strengthening benefits, women should eat more meat, fish, milk, cheese and eggs.

She adds: “Vitamin D also helps with hydration and protects against the sun and is abundant in oily fish, egg yolks and liver.”

“Vitamin E plays an important role in protecting skin cells from damage and strengthening the skin’s barrier function. It is found in vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, fruits and vegetables.”
