The European healthcare landscape is constantly changing due to a multitude of factors, trends and forces. Interrelated transformations, represented by demographic change and rapid digitalization, have wide-ranging implications for the health of our societies and healthcare systems. Moreover, the erosion of autonomous democracy by populist and authoritarian movements remains an underestimated part of health policy debates. Rather than dying in the dark, democracy is disappearing in the cold light of day. The healthcare community faces a stark choice: mobilize in this new environment or become complicit with its health consequences.
