CHICAGO, IL — As Mother’s Day approaches, Illinois State Senator Tammy Duckworth hosted a listening session centered around access to in vitro fertilization (IVF) at the Illinois Fertility Center.
IVF parents and providers listened as Ms. Duckworth shared her personal experiences and struggles while promoting the importance of the Family Formation Access Act.

“As mothers, we know the joys and struggles that come with being a parent every day, and I know that none of us would change that for a second,” Duckworth said. But they probably wouldn’t even have been born if I didn’t have access to the basic reproductive rights that Americans have relied on for nearly half a century until recently. As the Republican anti-choice movement continues, medical professionals and advocates are working to ensure that Illinois remains a beacon of reproductive freedom for women around the world who are unable to access the life-saving medical care they need. I am deeply grateful for their work.”
The discussion included reproductive health experts, three Illinois mothers who had children with IVF support, and a guest at Duckworth’s 2024 State of the Union address, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility expert. A certain Dr. Amanda Adeley served as master of ceremonies.

Duckworth used in vitro fertilization to help conceive her two children, making her the first senator to give birth while in office. Duckworth also tried to persuade the Senate to change the rules to allow infants to be brought onto the Senate floor.
