“Mindfulness is paying attention,” Mooyoung explains to a middle school class. “There are her two ways of paying attention: inside and outside.”

One of the ways Mooyoung helps bring that attention to her students is by practicing yoga.

“Today’s purpose is love and compassion,” says Mou Yong, who leads the class.

Moo Yong wants students to explore these feelings.

“Mindfulness brings in the emotional part and helps you handle your homework,” he said..

Since practicing mindfulness, 13-year-old Noel Pennington says he feels more confident.

“It helps me think for myself and makes me feel better,” said a seventh grader.

That’s the goal, says Mooyoung, who uses his life experience to inspire his students.

Mooyoung showed the students her elementary school report cards with D’s and F’s on them, adding that she didn’t realize she had dyslexia until she entered college.

“I was embarrassed because I didn’t know how to handle it emotionally, so it sustained me for life,” Muyong said.

The Chicago boy turned nurse, yoga instructor, and now a mindfulness coordinator striving to create safe and supported spaces for students to thrive.

“I want to give my kids this chance to use these tools and make them successful so they don’t have to go through the same struggles as I did when I was a kid,” Mooyoung said.

He also says that connecting with students outside the classroom creates a sense of community.

“I’m out in the community, the hallways, the dining room, the gym, everywhere, because I want kids to see me in their environment, not just in the classroom.”

Mooyoung sees many changes in how children find it easier to express themselves when they are able to process their emotions, when they are able to open themselves up to many things in life. It says it came.
