Running essentials from an expert runner

Running has been a big part of my fitness and exercise journey for over 10 years, and I can confidently claim that I’m a bona fide addict. Currently, my lifetime records include completing at least 200 races, running up to 85 miles each week, and running PRs of 4:53 for the mile and 16:38 for the 5K. In 2022, I also became the 26th American-born Black woman to break 3 hours in my 2:48 marathon debut.

It takes mental and physical stamina to keep up with activities like this, but what I rely on most is a solid routine. In fact, I rely on a ton of products to help me get through those lonely miles and get injury-free training blocks.

Ready to start your own running journey? I’ve compiled all of my favorite daily gear, from pre-run activation tools to on-run and recovery essentials. Perfect whether you’re new to marathon running or planning your next marathon.

In my 15 years of running, I can count on my hands the number of days I’ve gone without using a foam roller. That’s how much I rely on my foam roller. This is a proven way to loosen leg muscles that get stiff overnight or feel sore throughout the day. One of the first things I do before I go for a run in the morning is foam roll to wake up my legs. It only takes a few minutes, but I always notice a difference when I take the time to loosen up my muscles.

I’ve had my fair share of injuries over the years, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s to continue to strengthen my weaknesses. Activating weak muscles and joints before a run is key to preventing injury and maintaining long-term health (just kidding). To be honest, I’ve been late to skin care, but in 2020 I experienced my first painful sunburn. I can’t go back now. Now that I’m running more miles and racing, I realize it’s more important than ever to apply a reliable SPF regularly. Especially on days when he spends a solid hour and a half in the sun. This Tula sunscreen has quickly become a favorite of mine. Because it won’t leave a white cast or run down your face during your workout, and your skin will stay bright and glowing when you step out.

Just like sunscreen, it’s a habit to apply a lip balm with SPF 30 every day to keep your lips from becoming chapped or chapped. And I’ve even noticed that it has developed some dark spots over time from years of running in the sun. Now, I’m taking extra steps to protect my lips from damage with Supergoop!’s Lipscreen. I live by my running watch. I like the functionality and accessibility of this watch, but what I like about the Coros Pace 2 is that it’s simple, no-thrills, and designed to give you just the amount of data you need without getting too technologically advanced. It is designed to. Whether you’re logging easy miles or hitting the track for speed, this watch takes the guesswork out of your training and provides reliable data and feedback directly into the free app. GPS connectivity is fast and efficient, allowing you to use it for days without charging.

Rain or shine, a good running hat will go a long way. Braving the Boston weather means keeping things out of your face and wearing a hat that sticks with you even in the howling winds. My go-to running hat is this Brooks hat, which is durable, water-resistant, and fits comfortably over my head and hair.

Two things stand out about this sports bra. It’s great support and pockets. I own four Allston pocket bras. I can’t get enough of the comfort. It provided a comfortable and reliable ride with no chafing or chafing. A huge front pocket is convenient for storing small essentials such as keys, wallet, and phone.

I work from home using this massage gun almost every hour of the day. This tool is perfect for quick releases to aid foot recovery. It’s also intuitive as you can change pressure and speed levels, and comes with an adjustable attachment head to target specific areas. When combined with the app, it provides insights and detailed routines to help you get the most out of your massage.

Next to TikTok, Strava is my most used running app on my phone. The app is free, but we like the service the subscription model provides. As a runner, I’m always obsessed with statistics. With this subscription, you’ll have access to deeper insights into your exercise levels and training loads that you wouldn’t otherwise have access to. I use Strava to upload my runs and track stats like pace, route, daily/weekly mileage, etc. Not to mention, Strava is full of fun ways to connect with friends and local running events in your community.
