Archives NZ reveals past health record violations
New Zealand’s National Archive Archive NZ has revealed a case of unauthorized access to historical health records that occurred three months ago.
On September 19th, the agency was informed by former Archives NZ staff that some of its digitized health records dating back to the 1950s had inadvertently been made open access. These recordings, which were restricted from public access, were unintentionally made available to general users of the Rosetta Digital Imaging System.
Records include Sunnyside Hospital admissions from 1952-56. Diary of 1968 and entry book for recognized offenders from 1966 to 1973.
Following this, authorities immediately restricted access to the records and formally notified both the Privacy Commission and Te Fatu Ora of the potential breach of privacy.
“We sincerely apologize for this incident, which was the result of human error. We would like to reassure you that corrective action has been taken immediately. We understand that you may have concerns and concerns about this information breach,” the statement said. .
So far, only two members of the public were known to have accessed the records in August. According to Archives NZ, “We were unable to determine if the image was downloaded or shared during the access event.”
Nonetheless, officials are “highly confident that the scope is limited and that this is a one-off case of human error rather than a systemic problem.”
