Richard Harvey Martin, MD August 27, 1932 – September 29, 2022
Richard (Dick) Harvey Martin passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2022. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022 at 4:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church 16 Hitt St, Columbia, MO 65201, followed by a reception at the church. Visitation will take place at the church on Monday from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. A private burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery 1217 Business Loop 70 West Columbia, Missouri.
Dick was born and raised in Northern Indiana. He served as valedictorian of Laporte HS in his 1950, Johns. He married his high school sweetheart, Carol Lew Olea, while he was in medical school. He moved to Seattle and served in the United States Navy for two years. He stayed in Seattle and completed his medical training at the University of Washington.
In 1965, he joined the faculty of the University of Missouri School of Medicine and became the first director of the Department of Cardiology. He has won several teaching awards and served on the Board of Directors of the Missouri Chapter of the American Heart Association.
Dick and Carol moved to Little Rock, Arkansas in 1983 and worked as cardiologists at the Heart Clinic in Arkansas. He taught clinical medicine at the University of Arkansas and directed the non-invasive heart laboratory at Baptist Medical Center.
He retired in 1999 and returned to Columbia, Missouri with Carol in 2000. He further spent his two years part-time joining the faculty of the MU cardiology department.
He had a lifelong passion for yacht racing. With his wife and son, he has participated in several classes of sailing in 25 states and Canada, winning national and international competitions. After his retirement, he turned to sailing his sailing model his yacht and won his last championship in the Masters division at the age of 77.
Dick is survived by his wife Carol Martin of Columbia, Missouri, with son Michael K. Martin (Bonnie), granddaughter Lindsay Martin of Columbia, South Carolina, Lauren Somerset (Andrew) of Colorado, and three granddaughters. He is survived by his son Robert Martin.
