Rheumatology Match Day Follows Same Pattern as Previous Years

Rheumatology joins six other medical specialties that accounted for over 95% of fellowship positions in 2022.

2022 National Resident Matching Program in Medicine and Pediatric Specialties report Its rheumatology accounted for 123 of 127 accredited programs (96.9%) and 265 accredited positions (97.8%).

Matched applicants for the Adult Rheumatology Program included 40 (15.1%) U.S. foreign applicants, 123 (46.4%) MD graduates, 66 (24.9%) foreign nationals, and 36 (13.6%) DO graduates. was included.

A total of 352 applicants preferred this specialty, with 75% matching the specialty. Another 23% did not match any program.

2022 was the first year that the NRMP merged the Medical Specialty, Pediatric Specialty, and Adolescent Medicine Fellowship Matches into the “Medical and Pediatric Specialty Matches.”

As in 2021, pediatric rheumatoid arthritis did not perform as well as adult programs, accounting for only 18 of 32 accredited programs (56.3%) and 27 of 43 accredited (62.8%). Over 66% of his applicants were her MD alumni. Eight were foreigners and one was a graduate of her DO.

The 2022 game was the biggest on record. 39 subspecialties internal medicine, pediatrics, Addiction, and interdisciplinary specialties. In 2022, a total of 3,361 programs accounted for 7,648 (87.7%) of his 8,724 positions. Three specialties (cardiovascular disease, interventional pulmonology, and oncology) filled all the positions offered in the competition.

In addition to rheumatology, six other specialties accounted for over 95% of the positions in each. This includes clinical cardiac electrophysiology, critical care, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology/oncology, pulmonary/critical care. Allergy and Immunology, which accepts applications from either internal medicine or pediatrics, also filled over 95% of the positions recruited.

Matched applicants will begin fellowship training in July 2023.
