In a world that demands gender equality and human rights, the issue of women’s and girls’ sexual and reproductive health rights, together with the pressing challenge of physiological poverty, requires an urgent response. Boasting a diverse population and commitment to development, India is committed to formulating menstrual care policies. This puts India in a position to lead policies to protect these rights, empower menstruating people and eradicate menstrual scourge. poverty.

Here are some of the key areas that the Government of India must focus on as it undertakes this milestone.

  • Comprehensive sex education: One of the most effective ways to empower women and girls is to integrate comprehensive sex education into school curricula. This education should include menstrual health, reproductive anatomy, family planning and gender equality. By ensuring accurate information from an early age, India can debunk myths, dispel prejudices and foster a culture of open dialogue on sexual and reproductive health.
  • Accessible menstrual hygiene products: Availability of quality menstrual hygiene products at affordable prices is essential. The Indian government should consider implementing policies to provide free or subsidized menstrual products in schools, colleges, workplaces and public spaces. Working with NGOs and the private sector can help distribute these products effectively and ensure that women and girls are not held back by lack of basic necessities.
  • Health services for all: India’s health system must prioritize the unique needs of women and girls, including reproductive health. Ensuring access to affordable and comprehensive health services, including regular checkups, family planning resources and gynecological care, is essential. Telemedicine and mobile clinics can extend these services to remote and underserved areas.
  • Addressing cultural bias: India’s rich culture comes with unique challenges, especially prejudices against menstruation. Government-led awareness campaigns that challenge harmful taboos, myths and cultural practices can play an important role in changing societal attitudes. Engaging influencers, celebrities and community leaders can amplify the message of freedom from prejudice.
  • Data collection and research: Robust data collection on sexual and reproductive health indicators is essential for making informed decisions. The Indian government should invest in research to understand the extent of physiological poverty and its impact. This data guides evidence-based policy development and resource allocation to address specific challenges.
  • Empowerment through employment: Empowering women economically is key to addressing physiological poverty. India should focus on policies that promote female labor force participation, such as flexible working arrangements, maternity leave policies and childcare support. Financial independence enables women and girls to purchase menstrual hygiene products and manage their health effectively.
  • Collaborations and partnerships: Cooperation between governments, NGOs, civil society and international organizations is essential to address these issues effectively. Together, these stakeholders can share expertise, resources and experience to create a comprehensive and sustainable approach.

As a developing country, India has a responsibility to ensure the well-being and rights of all menstruating people. By implementing these policy recommendations, India can make significant progress towards achieving gender equality, eradicating poverty and promoting sexual and reproductive health rights. The empowerment of women and girls is not just a social imperative, it is also a catalyst for national progress and a brighter future for all.
