WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – A man accused of stabbing his Purdue University roommate to death has been ordered back to a state mental health facility.

After Friday’s hearing, the judge handed down the sentence against Ji Minsha.

Mr. Sha told the court that he was an intelligence agent. He claimed that the Central Intelligence Agency communicated with him through encrypted messages.

Earlier this month, the court heard Sha was not consistently taking his prescribed antipsychotic medication. Mr. Sha has only taken his prescription three times since mid-September, according to a report from the contractor overseeing his medical care. He is considered a “nonconformist.”

The judge then ordered him to take medication.

Shah is accused of stabbing his roommate Varun Manish Chedda to death in Purdue’s McCutcheon Hall dorm room in October 2022, and is charged with murder.

His mental health issues have been at the center of the case in recent months.

Doctors had previously determined that he met the criteria for schizophrenia and did not understand legal procedures. They believed his competency could be restored in a mental health facility, and he later said he was competent to stand trial as long as he took his medication.

Sha is scheduled to undergo a sanity test.
