CHICAGO — Two groups came together on Sunday to achieve the common goal of preventing gun violence and raising awareness of mental health.
Project sWISH Chicago partnered with the “Swervin’ through Stress” initiative, founded by Chicago rapper G-Herbo, to host a basketball event at the Pullman Community Center. It focused on providing local youth with a safe exit from gun violence. Improve each other’s mental health and emotional well-being.
Project sWISH Chicago was founded by McKinley Nelson about four years ago. His organization’s goal was to bring people together through the game of basketball and provide a safe haven away from guns and violence.
Similarly, G-Herbo’s Swervin’ Through Stress initiative aims to connect black youth with mental health therapy, help them recover from the trauma they experienced in Chicago, and financially cover their services.
“[G-Herbo’s] “He’s going to play basketball with us,” Nelson said at the event. I hope we can all sympathize with that.”
