Portsmouth, Virginia (WAVY) — Portsmouth Public Schools is one of seven statewide school departments selected to participate in federal student mental health grants.
Out of all 132 school districts in Virginia, Portsmouth Public Schools received the Federal Student Mental Health Grants Program, a $15 million nationwide initiative to support the expansion of behavioral and mental health services, by the Virginia Department of Education. I was lucky to be selected to participate in the for students.
Officials said the funding from the grant will support the department’s efforts to recruit and retain quality mental health professionals such as school counselors, school psychologists and school social workers, as well as department leaders. and provide more professional development opportunities for school administrators.
“This grant allows us to demonstrate our commitment to supporting the whole child,” said Portsmouth Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ellie Bracey III.
