A popular fitness influencer says New Year's resolutions around weight loss and exercise are doomed to fail because people set their goals too high.
talking about her Keeps your pods cleanerSteph Claire Smith said less than 10 per cent of people succeed in sticking to them.
“We did some research and found that on average only 7% of people complete their resolutions. That means 93% of people don't,” she explained.
“Most resolutions are things like “I'm going to stop eating junk food'' or “I'm going to exercise.'' But you should be more specific and think carefully about why you're doing it. ”
Steph said people can increase their chances of achieving a solution by developing small, manageable steps they can take slowly.
“Many of these challenges are built around the idea of achieving more. The key is to develop habits that you can stick with,” she explained.
“I had a fitness challenge where I had to work out twice a day for eight weeks. I had friends who did it, but they were turned off. It's not sustainable, never like that. I won’t do that.”
She added that people need to cut themselves some slack and be kind to themselves when it comes to challenges like losing weight in the new year.
She concluded that as long as people are making small steps toward their goals each week, they are working toward achieving their goals and should be happy.
Last month, Steph revealed the unexpected perk of cutting her long hair into a bob.
Last week, she followed fellow Australian influencers Tammy Hembrough, Ella Dinn and Melissa Leung in cutting off her trademark blonde mane for the first time as an adult.
She reflected on her newfound behavior during an episode of her podcast, telling co-host Laura Henshaw that her short hair has helped her sex life with husband Josh Miller.
Steph, who has been dating Josh for almost 12 years, said their time in the bedroom improved because Josh “felt a little different” with his new look.
She is best known for being the face of the multi-million dollar fitness empire Keep It Cleaner.
She married Josh Miller in 2019 and they have one child, son Harvey, who was born in 2021.
