Police identify suspect in Methodist Dallas hospital shooting that left 2 dead

Dallas police have identified a suspect in custody after a shooting Saturday morning at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center killed two hospital employees.

Nestor Hernandez, 30, has been charged with murder. Hernandez is currently out on parole for aggravated robbery and had an active ankle monitor.

Around 11 a.m., Methodist Health System police, the Dallas Police Department, and the Dallas Fire and Rescue Corps responded to the shooting at Block 1400 on North Beckley Avenue, the hospital said in a news release Saturday afternoon.

Two hospital workers died after the man opened fire. A Methodist officer opened fire on the suspect and was wounded, according to the hospital. The suspect was taken into custody and taken to another local hospital.

“The Methodist Health System family is heartbroken by the loss of two of our beloved team members. Our entire organization mourns this unimaginable tragedy,” said the hospital system. The executive issued a written statement. “Our prayers are with the deceased colleague and his family, and the entire Methodist family. We thank the community for their support during this difficult time.”

Authorities have not released the cause of the shooting or the identity of the victims. At least 10 Dallas police cars were parked near the center’s emergency department in North Oak Cliff.

“We will do everything in our power to support this investigation,” Garcia wrote. “This is a tragedy and an abhorrent failure of our criminal justice system.”

Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins and Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson have asked for prayers for the families of the victims.

Johnson tweeted, “Our city loves our healthcare heroes. Residents are there for them when we grieve and call for speedy justice.”
